Addictions: A Perfect Storm?

Thursday, October 10, 2019 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Details

A synthesis of evolutionary and psychoanalytic perspectives offers an understanding of how biological, psychological and technological factors have converged to fuel the current explosion of chemical and behavioral addictions.

Why hasn’t our experience with addictive behaviors over the years (centuries!) enabled us to avoid this disaster? What are the psychological resistances to doing what needs to be done to prevent addictions from taking hold and to helping people to escape from their deadly grip? How can we resolve these resistances, ride out the current storm and chart a path to calmer waters in the years ahead?

Presenter:

Eugene Goldwater, M.D., Cert.Psya. is on the faculty at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and has studied, taught, lectured and written about addiction for many years. His extensive clinical and training experience includes work in a variety of mental health settings and private practice.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the various perspectives which offer and unde3rstanding of biological, psychological and technological factors fueling addictions.
  2. Discuss the psychological resistances to addiction prevention.
  3. Discuss ways to address this problem from a psychoanalytic perspective and compare to other perspectives.
